What is an iPad mockup?
Mockups are pre-created, customizable images that you can drag and drop your own content into. They are intended as placeholders to show you how your content may look once inserted. iPad mockups make it easy for you to add your app designs and screen grabs to realistic scenes that allow people to see what your app will look like in everyday life.
They also allow you to seamlessly market your app via both digital and print advertising. Ramotion has dozens of carefully crafted iPad mockups ready for you to use today.
How do you use iPad mockups? How can I add my own content to a mockup?
iPad mockups are easy and intuitive to use. Most mockup files contain a folder with an editable image and a PDF or JPG file, at a minimum.
You’ll be interacting with the editable image, while the PDF or JPG is there to help you visualize how the final product will display.
To create your own custom mockup:
- Unzip the mockup file.
- Open the file in Adobe Photoshop or Sketch and familiarize yourself with the file layers. These layers are what you’ll be editing in order to replace the template with your own content. Each layer has a space for you to replace a placeholder with your own unique imagery.
- Next, locate the Smart Object, which is an image that you can flexibly edit without ever damaging the original quality. The Smart Object is essentially a protective layer that encompasses the original image within, allowing you to make exterior edits that you can endlessly change without affecting the quality of the original source.
- Once located, you’ll want to insert your own content into the Smart Object layer. To do this, simply drag and drop your design into the file to swap the placeholder content with your own artwork.
- Now, you’re ready to save and view the mockup which now displays your very own, unique content.
Which version of Photoshop or Sketch do I need to have to use the mockups?
Our Photoshop mockup files are often large, or PSB (Photoshop Big), file extensions. PSB files can be opened by Adobe Photoshop CS or later.
Our Sketch mockups are compatible with Sketch 50 or later versions.
Do I need advanced graphic design skills to use these mockups?
You don’t need to be an experienced graphic designer to use our mockups. However, you do have to know your way around design programs at a semi-advanced level in order to customize and adjust the mockups to your needs.
This basic understanding will help you to navigate layers and, most importantly, to find and edit the Smart Object Layer. The more skilled you are, the more adept you’ll be at editing the Smart Object Layer by using tools such as masking, adjusting opacity and creating layer groups.
What’s the most common way to use mockups? How can I benefit from using them?
Mockups are an important part of the design process. They’re a visual representation of your app that can be presented in real-world scenarios to clients, potential customers, or coworkers.
When marketing your app, you want potential users or clients to be able to picture themselves using it on their own devices. By looking at the mockup, customers should be able to know exactly how the app will look and function. They’re also important selling points on the App Store as they serve as the captivating screenshots that will attract users to download your app. In the office environment, they’re useful in pitch decks and presentations to convey functionality, appearance and the basic structure of your content.
